چکیده

purpose : fine needle aspiration (fna) cytologic findings of langerhans cell histiocytosis (lch) have been well described, but using this method in the diagnosis of orbital lesions is a recent experience. we hereby report two cases of orbital bone lch diagnosed by fna that later was confirmed by routine h&e; histopathology and immunohistochemistry (ihc) methods. case reports : the first case was a one-year-old boy with a left upper lid mass. radiologic findings were suspicious for malignancy. the other case was a three-year-old boy with right lower lid edema. radiographic study revealed a mass with peripheral condensation and orbital bone defect. fna of lesions in both patients showed a mixed cell population of eosinophils, neutrophils and lymphocytes admixed with neoplastic histiocytes with folded nuclei. consequently, the cytological diagnosis was “langerhans cell histiocytosis” that was confirmed by the routine histopathologic examination. in both cases staining for cd1a by ihc method was also performed that showed positive reaction. conclusion : lch should be considered in differential diagnosis of primary orbital bone lesions specially in childhood. fna method may be useful in the diagnosis of orbital lesions suspicious for lch.   iranian journal of ophthalmology 201022(1):56-59 © 2010 by the iranian society of ophthalmology

Diagnosis of nodal Langerhans cell histiocytosis by fine needle aspiration cytology.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease and disease confined to the lymph nodes is even more uncommon. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology of LCH of the lymph nodes has rarely been described. A case study of LCH of the lymph nodes in a 23-year-old man is presented. FNA smears showed high cellularity composed of many isolated Langerhans cells (LCs) with nuclear grooves admixed wi...

Solitary Cranial Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis: Two case reports.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a proliferation of Langerhans cells intermixed with inflammatory cells, in particular eosinophils, that may manifest as a unisystem (unifocal or multifocal) or multisystem disease. We describe the clinical and histologic spectrum of LCH of the orbit and skull in our two cases. Both cases had unifocal erosive skull lesions with a history of trauma. Typical ...

A case of ameloblastoma diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration cytology.

A preoperative presumptive diagnosis of ameloblastoma is sometimes made in the light of available clinical and radiological data, which are generally not very characteristic. The final diagnosis can only be made on the basis of histologic features. In this paper, a case of ameloblastoma diagnosed preoperatively by fine-needle aspiration cytology is presented and the potential value of this tech...

Diagnosis of Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis on Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology: A Case Report and Review of the Cytology Literature

A case of multifocal Langerhans cell histiocytosis in a two-year-old child is presented where fine needle aspiration was helpful in achieving a rapid and accurate diagnosis in an appropriate clinical and radiological setting. This can avoid unnecessary biopsy and guide the management especially where access to histopathology is limited. The highly characteristic common and rare cytological feat...

Chondroid syringoma diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration: a case report.

We describe a case of an 82-yr-old woman presenting with a thyroid nodule and axillary mass thought to be a metastasis. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) revealed the axillary nodule to be a chondroid syringoma. We report here the cytologic features of chondroid syringoma and recommend the use of FNA in the evaluation of cutaneous and subcutaneous lesions in general.

Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis Followed by Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Case Report

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare neoplasm defined as the proliferation of bone marrow langerhans cells, which is a kind of dendritic cells. The major pathological features of LCH are expression of CD1a and S100 as well as Birbeck granules. Its presentation can differ from a mild bone lesion to a multi-systemic evolved malignant neoplasm; however, the latter outcome is almost rare. ...
